Absinthe - New Version 2.0.2

After Apple updated the iOS 5.1.1 build for the iPhone 4 GSM to 9B208, which was incompatible with Absinthe the Chronic Dev Team updated Absinthe to 2.0.2.

It still wont run with Mac OS X Mountain Lion, so i updated my fixed version as well.

After copious amounts of work and many sleepless nights Absinthe 2.0 is finally here to jailbreak your device. This release has been a large collaborative effort between Chronic-Dev Team and iPhone Dev Team. This jailbreak supports firmware 5.1.1 ONLY and is again one of the most easiest jailbreaks to use.

How To Use Absinthe 2.0:
  1. Make a backup of your device in iTunes by right clicking on your device name under the ‘Devices’ menu and click ‘Back Up’.
  2. Once your backup is complete return to your device and go to Settings – General – Reset – Erase all Content and Settings. This will make the jailbreak process much faster.
  3. Open Absinthe and be sure you are still connected via USB cable to your computer.
  4. Click ‘Jailbreak’ and wait…. just be patient and do not disconnect your device.
  5. Once jailbroken return to iTunes and restore your backup from earlier. Right click on your device name under the ‘Devices’ menu in the left panel of iTunes and click ‘Restore from Back Up…’ then select the latest backup you created before. (restoring this backup will return all the content previously on your device ie, apps, photos, etc.)
  6. Thanks for using Absinthe, enjoy your jailbroken iDevice!

ForkLift - robust and elegant file manager and FTP/SFTP client

Back when i switched from Windows to OS X one application i really missed was a file commander like the "Total Commander". I tried quite a few filemanagers from PathFinder to xFolders, but each was either to minimal or to bloated. After a while i discovered ForkLift and for me its best "commander" styled file manager available.

Here are some key features of "ForkLift":

Dual Panes and Tabs:
Easily copy and move files from one directory to another, jump from one location on your filesystem to another using tabs.

iOS 5.1.1 - Available Now via iTunes and OTA

This update contains improvements and bug fixes, including:
  • Improves reliability of using HDR option for photos taken using the Lock Screen shortcut
  • Addresses bugs that could prevent the new iPad from switching between 2G and 3G networks
  • Fixes bugs that affected AirPlay video playback in some circumstances
  • Improved reliability for syncing Safari bookmarks and Reading List
  • Fixes an issue where 'Unable to purchase' alert could be displayed after successful purchase
You can download the Update directly on your device (Settings -> General -> Software Update).

Though iconic posted a picture of a jailbroken iPad 3 with iOS 5.1.1, if you plan to jailbreak your device you should stay away from it.

Beamer - play any movie file from your mac directly via Apple TV

"Drag any movie file onto Beamer and it will start streaming wirelessly to your TV with Apple TV instantly. No jailbreak required."

As simple as that; one window no preferences (yet) no options but it works amazingly well. I threw everything from SD AVI files to 1920p MKV's and everything played without any issues or hickups on my Apple TV 3.

Mountain Lion - Developer Preview 3 Build 12A193i

Yesterday Apple published an Update to the Developer Preview of Mountain Lion. Its available in the App-Store which completely replaced the regular Software Update.

"If you already have Mountain Lion Developer Preview 3 installed, choose Software Update from the Apple menu to download the update from the Mac App Store. Download Xcode 4.4 Developer Preview 4 from the Mac Dev Center to continue building apps for Mountain Lion Developer Preview 3 Update."

At first glance the notification center got updated with the possibility to easily disable any notifications, an feature that surely will be introduced in iOS 6 as well.

The system seems overall a lot more responsive and faster then the previous developer builds and it also seems to fix a few issues i had with DP3 like a freezing Dock.

Another feature we gonna see in iOS 6 is the user verification when Applications try to access your contacts, this was introduced in an earlier build but its actually the first time i saw the dialoge.

HackStore - App-Store Alternative for Mac OS X

The HackStore is the epitome of Cydia for iOS, but on a Mac OS. It allows you to easily install and update Applications that are not allowed in the regular Appstore.

The developers, a russian team, claim to not allow piracy apps "forever and ever". So far there are only free applications available and no information about future payment methods.

The interface is very similiar to the regular App-Store though currently very unresponsive. The software library has only a few titles so far and includes some that are available on the regular App-Store as well.

To use the HackStore with Mountain Lion you have to disable the Gatekeeper security feature since the application is not signed by any official developer.
