The software allows you to watch folders and organize your files according to your rules.
"Hazel can open, archive, set color labels and add Spotlight comments. In addition, you can have Hazel rename your files or sort them into subfolders based on name, date or whatever combination of attributes you choose. With Hazel's rule-based engine, you can create powerful workflows to automatically organize and process your files."
It also watches your trash and cleans it automatically when a certain size of junk is reached. It also features "App Sweep" which asks to delete settings, saves and temporary files if you drop an application into the trash. (dont worry it can also undo this actions). My rules for example include setting color labels for downloaded files (blue for new ones, red for files that sits longer then 1 week in my downloads folder) moving videos and applications to the specified folder and sorting pictures into iPhoto.
Hazel is really great to keep your folders organized and is one of the tools that daily does its magic without me even noticing.

Nice find!
great recommendation to keep things organized
pretty cool, I know someone that would love this. I'll mention it to them later.
Interesting, but I'm not sure I would want to use it. I feel like I'd accidentally lose stuff.
Wow looks kinda useful
As always good info, love your blog :)
good post
thats good to have
Use it too, very nice app!

Wait, I don't get it, how does this differ from normal folders?

Wow that looks really good. I could definitely use something like that lol.
seems to be a great software mate
Now that is useful.Nice one.
Wow i didn't know about this one, I always have a hard time figuring out a use for automation and stuff, but your little summary of what you use it for is a great idea!!
I always have this problem. I could definitely use this on my other Windows machine.
This is very cool.
The key to life is to be organized. Thanks introducing me to Hazel!
really useful dude ;)
Wow very cool
Hmmm...I've heard of this.
cool! will totally use this when I get on my main computer!
One hell of a writeup. Good information.
Looks great, I'll definitely give it a try sometime.
awesome, nice info :3
Very useful stuff. I think I spend more time organizing the computer than I do using it. That'll come in handy.
looks great, now I just need someone to teach me how to use it!
Thanks for this.
Our housekeeper is called Nicki :P
This sounds pretty cool.
But funny.
good post. continue posting
How is it different from me doing it?
Nice app.
@Rachel
there is no difference besides saving time
Very good point. Awesome app!
very useful, better than doing things manually
Will send this to my sister. She has a Mac.

Awesome cheers!
So would this be analogous to a souped-up version of Windows Explorer on a Microsoft box?
This seems pretty useful seeing how many different folders I have. Good find man imm definately gonna check it out.

really interesting! ill make sure to follow you closely for updates, cheers
Nice program. I'm going to use this.
@Aaron M. Gipson
hazel is watching folders and doing operations to the files based on, email filter like, rules
for example
i download a movie and when its done, it gets blue label (new) moved to my movies folder and starting index of plex media server to make it available to all my devices via mediacenter
Looks like very useful program.
Nice program, following because you have some interesting stuff here
Is this only on Mac or does it work on Windows 7 too?
That's an interesting concept, hmmm
how easy is it to set up? and as Renar said, does in come in windows? ;)
Setup is as easy as it can gets, double click an icon start setting up rules (like in your mail client).
Its only available for OS X.
For windows there are tools that do (nearly) the same like
http://www.desktopminds.com/cleandeskorganizer.html
and
http://mattcollinge.wordpress.com/software/file-mover/
but its nowhere near the elegance and simplicity of Hazel
I could totally use that. I just need some rules.
Wow, it's like a maid, only for my desktop!
Oh i could use that!
That looks very useful, I'll definitely check it out.
Thanks, I'll try this out
nice app. Hazel....I need you!
They make this for windows or linux?
That's a pretty cool app. I think my web design teacher would love it.
thats very cool!
Ha thats a pretty nice app, very useful.
Is anyone making these for windows?!
Coz I am really liking what I see around these blog...
that software looks very useful.
Very cool! Definitely going to use this on my mac! Thanks for recent support!
interesting must have
Great app. Too bad it doesn't exist for Windows.
I am guessing it isn't open source?
I need something like that. Thanks for also posting the windows version!
I was actually considering just wiping my computer.
This seems like a better alternative.
Wish I have a personal housekeeper in real life.
I've played with Hazel several times, but as a Ruby developer by profession, I've found it to be harder than I'd like to specify rules. Also, I didn't really like the idea of plunking down $20+ for a license.
I started writing my own scripts instead, and recently realized the tool I made could be useful to other people as an "open source Hazel". If you're interested in trying it out (or helping develop it!), check it out at http://rubygems.org/gems/maid and http://github.com/benjaminoakes/maid.
If you're on a Mac, it's simple to install. Just run `sudo gem install maid` from the Terminal (or `sudo gem install maid --pre` while it's in beta). There's a tutorial at http://github.com/benjaminoakes/maid.
I haven't done much with it on Windows/Linux yet, but many parts should be able to be adapted easily.
