Let's be honest the build in firewall in Mac OS X is not very useful and nowadays applications send all kind of information stored on your computer to whoever they want. Using Hands Off!, you can monitor and control Internet connections from all applications as to expose hidden connections and prevent them from sending data without your consent.
The installation is very easy just drop Hands Off! to your applications folder and run it, without rebooting you are instantly protected.
Applications that try to access network connections or files will prompt a dialog where you can decide to either block or allow those. Those decisions get saved as rules which you can modify at any time.
You can also create rules to allow access to specific domains/ip adresses or files for all applications without getting asked when a application access tries to access those.
Unlike it competitors Hands Off! can even block DNS resolve queries.
The Network monitor. which gives you a quick look at all traffic on your box, is another neat feature.

Tl;dr? Here is a brief overview of the features:
Protect your privacyKeep an eye on Internet connections from all applications as to expose the hidden connections.
Prevent them from sending data without your consent, hence avoiding information leakage.
Safely run untrusted applicationsManage disk access so dubious programs cannot obtain confidential information. Avert permanent changes or data loss by prohibitting disk writing. Prevent viruses and other malware infiltration.

Heh I like the name. As for whether macs need firewalls: It's true that there are less viruses for Macs. But the reason for that isn't because they're naturally safer. It's because no one (Or very few people, really.) care enough to write a virus for them.
Good stuff mate, looks like it will be useful
Not many programs make me want a Mac, but this one looks really useful. I hate it when programs access the internet without my permission.
Thank for the explanation! Its all clear now.
