Growl lets Mac OS X applications unintrusively tell you when things happen, being the semi-standard it centralizes the management off notification for nearly every application. You can check all applications that support Growl in the Application Database. You can call it from scripts (apple script as well as bash scripts) and it not only offers visual notifications instead you can send a email, sms or trigger other stuff.
Growl features:
Notifications are a way for your applications to provide you with new information, without you having to switch from the application you're already in.
ControlGrowl offers you complete control over which notifications are shown and how they are displayed. You will not receive any notifications that you do not want, because you can easily turn notifications (specific ones or all of them) off.
Ease of useWhen you start up a Growl-enabled application, it will "just work." Your apps can start displaying notifications right away.
Consistency
Growl centralizes all your notification preferences into its preference pane - you can control them all from one place, and you know exactly how they are going to behave.
Growl is very flexible. Notifications can be emailed to you or spoken instead of displayed on the screen.
Skinnable
Choose your favorite visual style or create new ones, you can even create scripts that instead of displaying the notification triggers a webservice or send an email.

This seems very good to keep organized! That's something I need to work on lol
I don´t run a lot of applications so I don´t think I need Growl.
I always install Growl everytime I do a fresh install on a mac. It's just that useful. I believe there's a windows alternative too.

Speaking of standard super-useful applications, you should do a feature about Quicksilver! I know there's probably a few functions I don't know about, and it's totally awesome.
