Plex Media Center

Plex Media Center bridges the gap between your Mac and your home theater, doing so with a visually appealing user interface that provides instant access to your media. Plex can play a wide range of video, audio and photo formats without having to install any third party video plugins and can stream online audio and video content served by Plex Media Server. Your media library has never looked this good!

After adding your Movie/TV-Series folder Plex starts to automatically indexing your media, downloading meta data and providing it in a nice interface.
You get stuff like DVD covers for you'r favorite shows or movies and if you select a TV-Show the intro jingle starts to play and you see reviews of each episode you own.

Plex integrates content from iTunes and iPhoto as well as allows the user to manage all video, photos, music, and podcasts from a computer, optical disk, local network, and the Internet using an Apple or Harmony remote control. It also features an own  'app store' digital distribution platform called "Plex Online" with a growing list of community driven plugins for online content like Hulu, Netflix, and CNN video.

The interface can be skinned and is very customizable which adds to the user experience and you can also stream the media to another mac, iphone or even android.

It supports nearly every known video codec and subtitles and you wont use any other mediacenter again :) and the best part: its completely free!

This sure beats the hell out of Windows XP Media Center edition. That was just a tragedy...

I must ask a similar question as ed, do you know if it is compatible for Linux distros, specifically Gentoo?

If I had a mac, I'd definitely give this a go. Hope I get a chance to try this soon. :)

Now that's cool.

Sounds neat but I don't think I'd really use it. My Mac is more for work.

Alphabeta said...

Same as Devon here, but it's ideal for a recreational mac user or maybe someone in video.

I will download and try it, sounds interesting

Okay, note to self:
1. get new MacBook Pro - replace old one
2. Get iPad2
3. Get Mac Mini and install Plex
4. get iPhone5 when it comes out

2011 will be an expensive year
